In the Act of January 10, 2007 in Belgium, every employer is responsible for the psychosocial well-being of its workers, including harassment. How can the employer respond, so that complaints can be avoided?
Practice shows that a lot of complaints about bullying are regarded as a conflict. Preventive work around bullying embraces the teaching of problem solving skills to deal conflicts.
The ability to deal with conflicts has everything to do with assertiveness. Every individual has a different degree in standing up for his own interests. This can happen in several ways: assertive (constructive) or aggressive (destructive).
Assertive behavior can be learned so that each conflict in a productive way can be solved and doesn’t escalate into violence or harassment. For these reasons it is important that both workers and their management should be involved in bullying and resolving conflicts.
